How posts are counted
Three different things get called a “post”, and they give three different numbers. The national listing is built from offer codes — the individual lines an applicant preferences on Oriel. Each code carries a number of places: the trainees actually recruited to it. Deaneries separately count the posts they hold, or the trainees currently in them, which is different again.
This site counts places. 665 across the UK for the 2026 round, from 430 listings that are recruiting. That figure will not match a deanery’s own headcount, and is not meant to.
A further 267 offer codes are published with no places against them. These are not vacancies. The usual reason is that deaneries submit their posts in December, before the listing closes for the year: a post that might need to be offered at a different grade has to be entered a second time with zero places, so national recruitment can switch the two if the first does not fill. Listings with no places are left out of the map by default — the DCT filters have a checkbox to show them.
Data sources & licence
Core datasets are public sector information from the NHS England Dental Hub (DCTNRO post listing of 11 May 2026; DFT schemes listing reviewed 9 April 2026; DST specialty pages for the 2026 round), regional deanery websites, and the NIHR ACF allocations — used under the Open Government Licence v3.0. How locations are plotted
Every post is geocoded to its base site where published: 603 at verified site level, 91 at town level, 3 still to be confirmed by the deanery. DFT scheme areas are approximate county fills; pins mark anchor towns, not practice addresses.
Updates
Data follows the annual recruitment cycle: posts appear around January, preferencing runs April–May, and this site is refreshed for each round. This edition covers the 2026 intake.
